How To: Poetry
By Gerald Fitz - Published 2020-01-04

How do you write a poem?
Without drinking a jeroboam.
A biochemist must know about lysozyme.
And a poet must know about rhyme.
Interior and slant rhymes are for nerds.
And also technically for the kurds.
There is only one poetic device.
And one thing to clean teeth with: dentifrice!
My words hate to be personified.
So do the birds, trees and potassium bromide.
To make sense is not important.
End rhyming with words like “consultant”.
I don’t care about iambic pentameter.
Something Something Butter.
You must follow and AB rhyme scheme.
Even when it does not make sense, dream-
of using enjambment, but never do.
Or else your nightmares will come true
Similes are like C4
They should be a blown-up metaphor
Or at least be like an orange
Do me a favor, lookup “What rhymes with orange”
So do not care about syllabic count and proper flow
There is only one thing you need to know
Keep each line rhyming, and do so with care
Or else you will become a stair
Lyrics and meaning are stupid poetic elements
Make as much sense as a few elephants
Words should be picked to rhyme
The context and meaning are not important denime
And that was how to write poetry
